We have an (approx) 8-year old "black dog," (a 50 lb mutt from the pound) and a one-year old daughter who is starting to give her more and more attention. I sometimes wonder if she'll remember the dog when she's gone, or if it'll be the next one. Just having animals in the household to love and grow up with is pretty special. I've always been hyper-productive and regretted it when moving my studio. Ugh, dozens of big ugly canvases that seemed like such a good idea at the time. Yet mixed into the stacks of crap will be something that turns the jewel and the sparkle startles me.

Honestly, I don't think I have to make all that junk to find the one ruby. In the last few years my production is down, but I'd show almost everything I've made. Making 365 pieces a year would give me a bad case of "Leroyniemanitus": everything is equally bad or good depending on how much you squint your eyes.

Your photos continue to slow down my eye and make me enter them on different (if not your) terms.

Matt Weazyeazyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16273596996603673901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954174083947458716.post-61258502820380496582012-06-29T16:01:08.274-04:002012-06-29T16:01:08.274-04:00Sorry about your head and condolences on your gran...Sorry about your head and condolences on your grandmother passing. It set me aback when I saw Carlisle because my grandmother lived in Carlisle, Ontario and even thought I knew it was Iowa from the title and pic, my mind tried to tell me you might be talking about Ontario. Made me think of some beautiful scenes from their cottage on Lake Ontario. Anyway, regarding this post, I can't imagine how it is for you to face a blank canvas and have to go at it that way since I've never painted; it kinda scares me when I even conjure that image up in my mind, and I imaging walking around a lot, chewing on the end of the paintbrush... For me, I wrote a piece on this once, and in the final analysis I said it does leave me feeling honored or annointed somehow in a great way when I see what I've made like photographs or writing, or listen to it music wise. That's one experience though, then there's all the other times when I go back over things and they seem all wrong and empty etc etc... The final thing for me is that after that dance with lady art, I end up on the floor - as I said in the piece I wrote - prone, naked and alone. After a while you even get used to that, because well you have to if you want to go on. I've been around a lot of successful musicians working in the business and one thing I remember is a lot of them, not all, have this distance thing that happens, they get a bit jaded or something and I've watched people closely all my life and I can say that they are missing a lot of what is around them. Maybe it's because it all looks the same, and maybe I'm fooling myself by thinking it isn't but I still get attracted to everything and everybody immediately and I want to see and see and know and know. I wouldn't want to get to that other place for whatever that's worth.Breehttp://cleverdarling.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5954174083947458716.post-2123691651266307162012-06-07T17:09:14.457-04:002012-06-07T17:09:14.457-04:00Hi David--thanks for your comment. My post isn't meant to be about any one artist's merit per se, but more about the consistent similarities across the board from one series to the next. Very interesting about the popularity of your viewfinder images. Thanks again for chiming in. I have posted thousands of pictures on Flickr. Far and away, my photos of old viewfinders draw the most views from Flickr users. One of these, a Kodak Duaflex viewfinder, has been viewed over 10,000 times. I just assumed it's because people might be downloading it to use as a texture layer in Photoshop. Maybe instead they perceive great meaning in the dust and scratches. Kudos to Ms.Gould for submitting her work to Critical Mass.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03461006644312781883noreply@blogger.com
